63 DELUXE - DEBUT ALBUM - TRACKING DRUM MIX

Welcome to the lead up, through and out the other end of our upcoming album!

So the recorded raw drum tracks are in the computer and loaded up and sounding clean and the way i expected them to sound thanks to the great mics, signal chain and room at Twin Earth Studio.

Bret is busy rehearsing his lines as he is recording his bass next. Before he got his drum tracks to play to i thought it would best if they sound a bit closer to how they will sound in the final mix, not all the way there but at least tighter and punchier than just the raw beds. After a quick balance of the drums, here are the initial stages of mixing the drums (these are all Jack's natural drums, no samples added at all).

Have a listen below to the three stages of the drum mix;

The next sample is after some simple EQ and compression on the stereo drum bus ("top down mixing" - over the entire drums as a whole)

And in the third step each drum element has also had some treatment with EQ, compression and a small amount of reverb

The final sound of the drums will depend on how they sit in the mix of the particular song and how they serve the song best. This quick mix is a start for now and will help with the feel of the song when tracking the other instruments. Bass next but i personally can't wait to get some guitars down and add some other elements like keyboards, strings and horns. It's always satisfying in this building phase!

Here are some links to our conspirators, have a look;

Until next time ....
